Popcorn corn is a special variety of maize that is slightly smaller than typical corn. It gained immense popularity during the cinema boom of the 1920s and remains a beloved snack today, available in various forms, from sweetened to caramelized and salted.
Each popcorn kernel is encased in a very thin yet incredibly hard shell. This shell protects the soft kernel and withstands heat during the popping process. When the shell bursts, it produces the characteristic loud “pop” sound that defines this favorite snack.
Popcorn corn plants are much smaller than standard maize. Regular corn is not suitable for making popcorn.
