Poppy seeds are among the most versatile. They’ve been used historically to produce medications, lamp oil, and cooking oil. The plant, and consequently poppy seed oil, has its roots in Asia. However, Austria, particularly the Waldviertel region, has a long-standing tradition of cultivating poppy, which is the raw material we process at Schalk Mühle.
Poppy plants have a stunning, yet brief, flowering period. In August, fields glow with vibrant poppy blooms, which quickly fade as the blossoms dry and turn brown. This is when the poppy pods begin to form their gray, white, or blue seeds.
Dried poppy plants also make beautiful decorative elements. Simply cut them in late September to enjoy at home.
