Wolfgang Gössinger runs his organic farm in the Weinviertel, east of Vienna, in one of the most beautiful regions of Lower Austria. Covering approximately 4,900 km², this area is known for its diverse agriculture, and Wolfgang’s mixed farm includes crops, vegetables, winemaking, and organic pigs.
In 2009, upon taking over the family farm, Wolfgang made the decisive choice to convert to organic farming. Fascinated by the principles of organic agriculture, he appreciated its capacity to operate with significantly less external energy. Consequently, mineral nitrogen fertilizers have no place on his farm, aligning with his vision of sustainable farming practices. “Since then, our crop rotation has become much more diverse,” Wolfgang notes.
Transitioning to organic farming initially posed a thrilling challenge for Wolfgang. The substantial differences between organic and conventional farming practices were evident. He visited various organic farms, learned from fellow farmers, and gathered innovative ideas. “Managing my own farm, however, is a different story,” he shares, recalling concerns that arose: “Will weeds or the cultivated plants prevail? Can crops grow without mineral fertilizers?” These questions were valid as he sought to ensure the farm’s viability for his livelihood.
For Wolfgang, organic farming means maintaining healthy soil and essential resources for future generations. He achieves this through a diverse crop rotation that avoids synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, using winter cover crops and applying organic manure. On these flourishing fields, high-quality hemp and pumpkins grow, which are processed into premium products at Schalk Mühle.
Wolfgang describes his collaboration with Schalk Mühle, saying, “I can almost reduce it to ‘I and Rainer Schalk,’ as he’s the one I know best.” He adds, “We genuinely enjoy producing for them, as we’ve only encountered friendly people along the way.” Wolfgang appreciates that Schalk Mühle shares his commitment to producing high-quality organic food.
