Poppy

(Papaver somniferum)

Poppy is one of the most versatile seeds. It has been and is used for the production of medicines, lamp oil, or cooking oil. The plant, and thus poppy seed oil, originates from Asia. However, poppy cultivation has a long tradition, especially in Austria (Waldviertel), and this is also the raw material we process at Schalk Mühle.

The poppy has a magnificent flowering period, which, however, does not last very long. Therefore, you have to be quick in August, as the poppy fields shine in full glory then. Afterwards, the blossoms become very dry and brown until finally gray/white/blue poppy seeds form in the pods.

Dried poppy plants are also suitable as a decorative element. Simply cut them off at the end of September and take them home.
